Saints and Soldiers 2003 war film review

In December 1944 Germans are pushing through Belgium towards Antwerp hoping to change the balance of the war. In Malmedy captured American soldiers are executed by the SS, only a handful managed to avoid the death. Corporal Nathan Greer, called Deacon due to his righteous views, takes away rifle from German soldier chasing him, but hesitated when he had a chance to shoot him. Greer lets the German go and together with three other GIs fled the place of massacre. Now they are trapped behind enemy lines, somewhere in Ardennes, with one rifle and three bullets left. Deacon manages to find them a place to stay for a while - abandoned building in the middle of the forest, but soon German armoured vehicles arrives with couple of soldiers. Americans have no other option than hide under the floorboards and wait for enemy to leave. Another event takes place - nearby the building plane crashes, but the British pilot survives. He joins the Americans, but is determined to return to Allied lines as fast as possible since he has vital informations about German offensive in Ardennes.

American low-budget production that tells the story of Malmedy massacre survivors forced to break through the enemy lines. Although it is marked as "based on true events" the story itself is a fusion of separate true stories put together in single story. Saints and Soldiers is a simple tale of tough choices people have to make during the war and the whole film is just average - not bad, not great, just a simple story.

War films are not always showing the war per se - often the main theme is the influence of the conflict on lives of people involved, but also their families and friends. War is seldom a local thing - the trauma, the pain, the death they put their mark on people from around the world.
